Pilot and Pretest Work

Hospital CEOs' perception of competition: A pilot study

The Survey Lab conducted a mail survey of hospital CEO's in Illinois. The survey required a complex set of tailored lists for each respondent that gave the names of other hospitals with particular services within a certain radius of the target institution. We conducted phone follow-up to achieve a high response rate (78%) with this hard-to-reach group of busy professionals.

The Chicago Mature Women Study:
A Pilot for the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP)

This pilot tested the adaptation of the 1992 National Health and Social Life Survey for an older population. In this work we evaluated new questions about patient-physician communication, and ascertained the willingness of older women to answer specific questions about intimate relationships and behaviors and HIV/AIDS. We also tested the appropriateness of these questions to the women's actual experiences. The Survey Lab conducted 55 in-person, two-hour interviews with an economically and racially diverse set of women across the Chicago Metropolitan area. Women ranged in age from 58 to 93 years.
